Quote of the Week

Words and Photos By: Matt Gwilliam

Something that I was really excited about implementing in this years classroom was a “Quote of the Week” wall. My goal is to introduce students to famous/important/successful people throughout history and in our own times, and to learn from them. It gives me the opportunity to discuss their significance by conducting a mini-history lesson (bonus) and to expose students to positive, successful ways of thinking. As a class, we discuss the meaning and relevance the quotes have to our lives and how we can apply them to improve ourselves. So far it has been a huge hit. Many students copy down the quotes every Monday when they are introduced. Others use them in their weekly journal writings and papers. I would like to share with you all the Quote’s of the Week from the first Parcial of my year in Cofradia.

This is one of my favorites of all time

You are quite right, Mr. Ditka

Truer words have never been spoken.

It wouldn’t be a quote of the week wall without a little help from Ghandi.

This is my High School yearbook quote.

That’s it for the first parcial. So far I’ve managed to get a quote up every week without fail. I’m looking forward to keeping it going. If you have any suggestions for famous/optimistic/enlightening/thought provoking/ funny quotes that you think my classes should know about, please, share them with me. And then keep reading to find out if they made it on the wall.

Might be a bit weighty for your students, but here is one of my favorites and it applies to the way I think about BECA’s efforts with our Honduran partners:

“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” – Lilla Watson
